Workshopping Essay 1

I thought I would post a copy of the workshopping questions on this blog. If you want to have anyone else read your essay, or you just want a copy of these questions to use yourself while you revise, you can print out this entry.

Workshopping sheet for Essay One:

Author:

Peer reader:

Each author should take turns reading his or her paper out loud. Jot down any notes you may have in the margins. Then, talk to each other about each paper—don’t just write comments and hand them back with no discussion.

Write out the thesis sentence of this paper. How might your peer clarify this thesis?

Look over the intro. How could it be clarified, shortened, or made more immediately to the point? How could it better establish the writer’s authority? How might it appeal more to the audience?

Read carefully through the body of the paper. What is the main purpose of each paragraph? Are there any that should be shortened? Are there any that should be emphasized?

Does the narrative strike a balance between being so detailed that it loses the point, and being detailed enough to be enjoyable? Suggest places where the author might add or condense their narrative

Read the conclusion. If it seems a bit repetitive, how might the writer liven it up?

What are the strong points of this paper?

What are the main things the author should focus on in revising?

Choose some sentences that seem awkward to you, and help the author revise them so they are more concise.
